About Susquehanna River Corridor

The Susquehanna River Corridor follows the winding stretch of the Susquehanna River as it flows through New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland before emptying into the Chesapeake Bay. This corridor comprises protected lands, state parks, and designated natural areas that preserve the river’s ecological integrity and historical significance. The Susquehanna River is one of the longest rivers on the East Coast and serves as a vital freshwater resource and habitat for diverse species, including migratory fish like American shad and eels, as well as bald eagles and ospreys. The corridor’s varied landscapes include forested hills, wetlands, floodplain forests, and agricultural lands, providing excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation such as kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Along the river, visitors find historical and cultural sites including remnants of Native American settlements, colonial-era mills, and towns that developed around river commerce. The corridor’s inclusion in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers program protects significant segments of the river from damming and ensures conservation of its free-flowing state. Scenic overlooks along the river valley provide captivating views of rapids and broad calm waters, while nearby trails connect visitors with upland forests and stream habitats. The river corridor is a destination for paddlers seeking both calm stretches and more challenging whitewater sections, making it a diverse and accessible natural resource for outdoor enthusiasts.
